Best Laid Plans, Yadda Yadda Yadda

Happy Jake

Those of you who know me are aware that I lost my roommate and hairy son, my Bernese Mountain Dog, Cooper, last month.  It was a wrenching and traumatic time, and I wasn’t able to speak about him without breaking down until just a few days ago.

In the interim, I somehow managed to take into my home a young, eight-month-old Belgian Malinois puppy named Jake.  Who, by the way, wants to sample wine.  But I digress.

In the two and half weeks that Jake has lived with me, we have had an established routine:  he gets to stay in the air-conditioned house during these hot days in Vegas.  He stays in a pen in the

It's hot out here!

back bedroom, with a small bowl of kibbles, a bowl of ice water, several toys and a bed.  I leave a radio on for noise.  He now knows what’s going on in the world because I’m a news junkie.

My plans on July 14 was to talk about the Vegas Wineaux Wine Club party and French wine tasting celebrating Bastille Day.  I have pictures, was going to put together the slide show, talk about the wines, yadda yadda yadda.  Jake changed all of that.

Until yesterday, Jake staying in the house was no problem.  However, one “natural” toy I gave him caused a, um, *crisis* in the house.  From what I can ascertain from the evidence, the toy in question was eaten with enthusiasm.  It consisted of wool and some sort of natural plant material for stuffing.  Well, apparently this natural stuffing had a laxative effect on young Jake because I was greeted with holy piles of doody all over the room (he jumped out of the pen), down the hallway,  and on the WOOL RUG in my living room.  He also managed to throw up the equivalent of a hairball – plant fiber – on said wool rug.

Guess what I was doing all night?  Dinner was at 10 pm, and my shower was, in a word, long.  No Bastille Day today.

But, fear not!  I will have the said Bastille Day celebrations up and running shortly, and later will talk about my life with my dearly beloved and departed Cooper.  And how I managed to become the “mom” of a sweet, active, and loving puppy, Jake.

I could write a book.

Stay tuned!
