It’s a holiday weekend, and after visiting my mother in the hospital (incredibly, she’s improving and morphing back into her old tough broad persona), I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner and a bottle of wine.Â My budget said that it had to happen at home, so I found a small rib-eye at Fresh & Easy, a bag of Wild Rocket salad – one of my favorites – and a piece of dark chocolate from Trader Joe’s.
The Robert Young Estate Winery is an icon in Sonoma, and has been in existence for five generations. They really know what they’re doing. They make this amazing Cabernet-based wine, Scion, which is a Bordeaux blend.Â In 2002, the blend was Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Some years they may add Petit Verdot, but not in this particular vintage.
Gorgeous in the glass, certainly not looking like a ten-year-old wine other than the slightest garnet tinge.Â Age ring is less than what I would have expected on a wine of this age.
On the nose, it’s rich in dark fruit and earthy aromas.Â On the palate, it’s a beautiful thing.Â Firm, steak-friendly tannins and mouth-watering acidity hit you immediately, followed by black cherry, tobacco, dark cocoa, espresso, and dark plum. The fruit hasn’t faded a bit. It feels good in the mouth with great viscosity for the type of wine. No, it’s not a desert wine viscosity by any means, but even blind, you wouldn’t mistake this for a Pinot Gris.Â There’s nothing wrong with this wine; its character, aroma, and flavor are world-class and it richly deserves an Eddie!
Yes, I know you can’t buy it anywhere, but hopefully you’ll take a look at Robert Young Estate Winery when you’re looking for a very high-end Cabernet/Bordeaux wine, but want to keep it considerably under $100.Â This wine – as I have said many times before – can punch out just about any overpriced Napa red.Â So there.

The Youngs produce a stunning Cabernet from their vineyard on the eastern benchlands of the valley. This Cab is the polar opposite of Napa, and defines the alternative possibilities. Soft, intricate and herbal-earthy, it has beautiful black cherry, cocoa, tobacco and new oak flavors, and itâ€™s thoroughly dry. Drink now through 2015.
So I’m happy to award this wine my first Eddie designation.Â A beautiful, sexy wine that has only increased in quality ten years from vintage.
