End of the world or what?So what are you drinking tomorrow?  According to the Mayan calendar prophecy (pictured), the end of the world is supposed to happen on Friday.  At least that’s what the scientists and the Mayan language guessers say.  Unfortunately, I still have to go to work on Friday morning, but just in case, I decided to open up something fabulous and expensive on Friday evening.  Assuming that the end of the world waits that long and all.

Many years ago when I was still married to my second ex-husband, I just knew that $8.00 for a bottle of wine was absolutely amazingly expensive.  This was in the mid/late-90s.

As time went on, I realized that until wine price was in the double-digits, it really wasn’t expensive (“Ten dollars for a Pinot Noir?!? They must be out of their minds!!”). And then I discovered high-end Zinfandels, Cabernets, and Williams-Selyem.  Let’s just say that anything that’s under $20.00 nowadays is considered to be a “drinker” wine.  What’s a drinker?  Something that you can open up and not stress or go into paroxysms of angst about the cost or whether you can make the payments.

But at that time, god forbid that you should actually drink it. Perish the thought! Anything that cost more than $20.00 obviously had to be saved and “aged.”

Well, now that the end of the world is nigh, I figured that I may as well find something that’s worth drinking while the Earth is exploding (or we’re being invaded by aliens, Zombies have attacked, the waters have flooded the desert, blah blah blah. Or whatever).  My collection has shrunk over the last two to three years because I decided that actually drinking wines was the whole purpose of my buying wines in the first place.  While I have a lot of mid-level wines, the high-end wines are few.  While I’ve painfully reached the price of well over $70.00, I haven’t broken the $100.00 mark. Yet.

Give me a little time.  I’ll do it. You know. If we’re still here and all.

So what will I be drinking on the last day of the Earth?  Will it be one of my Kosta Browne Pinot Noirs?  Maybe one of my Williams-Selyem Pinots.  Maybe it will be one of my Robert Young Estate Vineyards beautiful Scion Bordeaux blends that I’ve lovingly coddled over the years.  My Hug Cellar Booker Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon? Or any one of the marvelous Zinfandels from Paso Robles?  I don’t know!

Obviously I’m being very flippant. Why?  One reason is because I’m the go-to girl when it comes to predictions.  For instance, in spite of my telling people that the world would not end and/or America come to a screaming halt and/or modern civilization devolve into cave-dweller status when the clock rolled over from December 31, 1999 at 11:59:59 to January 1, 2000 at 12:00:00, I wasn’t believed.  Afterwards, happy to say, I was greeted by many sheepish people. Turns out that they didn’t need the spare generators and freeze-dried “food” after all.

Here’s hoping that the same sheepish people seek me out on December 22.

I’ll be waiting, a glass of something expensive in hand.  Just in case.
