Dr. James Giacobine, half-brother of Gary Eberle and co-founder of the iconic Eberle Winery in Paso Robles, passed away quietly in his sleep in late January at the age of 95.  According to the obituaries which have extolled his many accomplishments, Dr. Giacobine was a man who fully lived up to the term Philanthropist and whose stellar life and influence on people will be sorely missed.  Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet him, and send my condolences to the Eberle family.  His death comes just months after the passing of another Paso Robles icon, Robert Hall of the eponymous Robert Hall Winery.

As you may recall, it was just last year that because of Dr. Jim’s illness, his wife power of attorney’d herself as major partner and along with two minor traitors partners, supplanted Gary Eberle as the head of the Eberle Winery. I ranted about that situation in an indignation-choked post shortly after the backstabbing coup change in partnership happened, and was – as was everyone, including Gary himself – horrified at the treasonous actions.

At last year’s Wine Bloggers Conference, I had the opportunity to speak with Gary about the situation, and was impressed by his graciousness, good will, and benevolence.  While no jury in the world would have convicted him had he decided to take, um, *stronger* measures, his own self-esteem and peace with himself has allowed him continue on as the titular head of Eberle Winery.

Once again, my condolences to the Eberles on the loss of their beloved brother.  May he rest in peace.
