Desparada! Recovering from Working Elections…

2022 Epione Sauvignon Blanc

I’m not a particularly political person. My voter status as a non-partisan independent (that means I don’t belong to any party. I’ve already been married twice…) should reflect that. I think that makes me the ideal poll worker during election season because my opinions are my own and the points don’t matter. (Thanks, Whose Line!) When asked my views on something, my answer is always “I’m not allowed to have a view on anything.” And that’s the actual truth!

Anyway, the first two days after the last of the presidential primary saw me catching up on much-needed sleep. I tried to have a glass of Syrah on the first evening but ended up wearing it when I dozed off in my recliner.

Desparada Fragment Sauvignon Blanc

I finally decided that it was time for a light wine. I have a few bottles of Desparada (not a typo) wines and decided on the 2022 Epione Sauvignon Blanc.

Pure bliss!

First of all, it’s pretty. It reminds me of Fragment, a Sauvignon Blanc also made by Desparada which was fermented in concrete and stainless and aged in Acacia wood casks. Also not a typo. The result was a beautiful, light yellow wine that was almost opalescent. Unfortunately, Desparada hasn’t made it for the last couple of releases. Epione is a close second.

The Epione is very fragrant, but it’s nothing like a New Zealand Sauv Blanc. It is more flowery with a bouquet that’s more like a meadow (think wildflowers and grasses). On the palate, its flower and citrus character comes through, and it’s hard to put down. Delicious, and I wish I had another bottle! Oh! And in the right light, it has a similar opalescent quality of Fragment, but the color is a little darker.

Vailia From of Desparada

Desparada quickly became one of my favorite wineries with its creativity and Vailia From’s courage in trying new old stuff. What do I mean by that? Amphora for one! Huge terra cotta amphorae are used to develop a lot of their wines, and the results are beautiful. I just wish my credit card wouldn’t whine so much!

Of course I’ll be stopping by when I visit Tin City again! As well as my favorite “winery.”
